This fabulous old photo features ‘The Big Tree’ – a large mature chestnut located in the middle of the main Dublin-Bray road.
It was a famous landmark situated right outside what is now the Silver Tassie pub.
In the 1970s the junction was upgraded and the tree removed. Sadly no sign of it remains today apart from a few photos such as this one.
We took a high resolution scan of the original photo that needed restoration. As can be seen it had been ripped on the bottom & had some marks that needed cleaning up. It was also quite badly discoloured.
We patched the torn corner of the photo and with a mixture of copying & pasting the foreground, coupled with the stamp tool, patched in the missing elements of the restored photo.
It’s still a bit dodgy looking in places at this stage.
Address the discolouring… Black & White
The first task was to add in a layer mask to minimise the worst of the discolouring.
We then added a curve mask and finally tinkered about with a black and white mask.
This which got rid of a surprising amount of the marks and minor damage as can be seen in picture to the right.
Restore & clean streaks, marks…
We figured it was time to get down to the nitty gritty of restoring this photo and went to work with the clone stamp tool.
With a bit of time and patience a huge amount can be achieved with this.
There’s still a nasty streak going right across our handsome subjects torso.
Seeing as he’s looking most dapper we wanted to show him at his best!
We copied and pasted elements of his clothing into paste and masked it to provide a seamless transition.
We then carried out some similar work on the other marks in the background.
At this stage we sharpened up the print with a high pass layer with overlay to sharpen up the whole photo.
The client wanted a hint of sepia added which was no problem at all.
Here is the final photo.
Print your newly restored Photo
Given the quality of the photo we figured we could print and mount it to a 10X8 acrylic block.
The quality of our blocks are second to none. They appear to have a prism like effect giving a 3 dimension look.
They are really proving popular at the moment with our restored photos – they provide a great contrast between the timelessness of the shots and a modern crisp mount.

We’re pretty sure the client was happy with the final result as they we printed some additional Acrylic Blocks for her family.
We were delighted ourselves and decided to put one up on display in the shop for all our customers to see.
